Coupled Quantum Matter > Team Leader

Guanghui Cheng, Professor, Ph.D.

The Principal Investigator, Dr. Guanghui Cheng, is a Professor and Ph.D. Supervisor at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), and a recipient of the Distinguished Young Scholars Program. He earned his Ph.D. in condensed matter physics from USTC, followed by postdoctoral research at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Purdue University. Before returning to China, he served as a tenure-track Assistant Professor at Tohoku University (FRIS/AIMR), Japan. He joined the School of Physical Sciences at USTC in 2026.

His research focuses on the construction and control of quantum matter in coupled two-dimensional systems. His achievements include the discovery of emergent interfacial ferromagnetic order and the manipulation of superconductivity via quasiparticle couplings. In particular, he extended twist engineering to magnetic materials, laying the foundation for the rapidly growing field of moiré magnetism.

Cheng has published multiple papers as first or corresponding author in leading journals including Nature Electronics (cover article), Physical Review Letters, and Nature Communications. He has also been invited to serve as an independent reviewer for journals including Nature PhysicsPhysical Review Letters, and Advanced Materials.
