Short Announcement

We are thrilled to announce that Professor Long Shi’s groundbreaking research on the relationship between climate change and urban fires has been featured on China News Service (中国新闻网). The study recently published in Nature Cities, marks the first comprehensive analysis of how climate change influences urban fire incidents globally.

Professor Shi and his team compiled data from 2,847 cities across 20 countries, constructing a global urban fire incident database spanning from 2011 to 2020. Their findings project significant increases in urban vehicle, outdoor, and forest fires under high greenhouse gas emission scenarios by 2100. Notably, global warming-induced fire incidents are expected to cause 335,000 deaths and 1.1 million injuries by the end of the century.

This research offers critical insights for future urban planning, emergency response strategies, and fire prevention policies, emphasizing the urgent need for adaptive fire safety measures in a changing climate.
